What is "SWELL"? Success With English Language Literacy
Literacy is a set of social practices that help shape our understanding and our views of the world. Literacy is the ability to comprehend and communicate information confidently, fluently and accurately in a range of contexts. It is essential for learning; therefore literacy development is integral to teaching.
The purpose of a whole school Literacy Plan is to establish and implement a planned, systematic and uniform approach to the teaching and learning of literacy in order to improve student learning outcomes. All teachers are teachers of literacy. Literacy is core business for all schools, in every classroom, in every key learning area and for every teacher of students in Years K-12.
The Miller Technology High School Literacy Plan, SWELL, demonstrates a focus on the embedded, explicit teaching and assessment of literacy needs across all curriculum areas. Based on the fundamental need to close the literacy gap of our English language and Standard language learners, Success With English Language Literacy, is a multi faceted approach to improving literacy through:
• up-skilling all staff in literacy pedagogy and practice (e.g. Prioritising Grammar, Teaching English Language Learners)
. adopting a uniform approach to addressing student reading comprehension needs (Text, Author, Authenticity, Purpose, Structure model)
• embedding literacy into learning programs (e.g. Persuasive Texts Workshops)
• targeted group and individual student support (Reading to Learn, Indigenous Students Reading Program)
• setting of personalised professional literacy learning goals (Literacy Learning Ladder)
• increase in literacy leadership density across the school (HT of Literacy/ ESL, TELL facilitators)
• action research to further inform literacy pedagogy
• ICT as a catalyst for engagement in literacy learning (e.g. One Note, Edmodo, SMART Notebook 10, IPads)
• a whole school collaborative literacy teaching model (triangulation)
• additional funding (e.g. National Partnerships)
